Why we are not attorneys, and why that helps you

The most common question we get is what exactly we are. Here is the whole answer, including the part that sounds bad.

Someone introducing two people to each other in a bright hallway.

LegalNet is two people. We connect you with a licensed attorney who handles your kind of case. We are not attorneys, we do not give legal advice, and we never work on your case.

People sometimes hear that and wonder what the point is. It is a fair question and it deserves a direct answer.

The part that sounds bad, said first

The attorney pays us a referral fee. We are not paid by you, which means our service is free to you, and it also means somebody else is paying. You should know that before you decide whether our recommendation is worth anything to you.

We would rather be judged on information you actually have than trusted on information you do not.

Why not being attorneys is genuinely useful

An attorney has to decide whether to take your matter. That is a commercial decision as well as a legal one, and it is made by the same person you are asking for an honest assessment.

We are not deciding whether to take your case, because we never take cases. What we can do is listen to what happened and think about which attorney is actually right for it, including saying that your situation is not one we place.

What we cannot do, plainly

  • We cannot tell you whether you have a case.
  • We cannot tell you what a deadline is or what to file.
  • We cannot advise you on strategy, value or options.
  • We cannot represent you or speak for you.

Those are not modesty. Doing any of them would be practising law without a licence, which is against the law in Arizona and would be worse for you than useless.

What we do instead

We take the time to understand what happened, in English or Spanish, without a form to figure out. We match the matter to an attorney we know personally who handles that kind of work. We make the introduction and step back.

How to hold us to it

Check whoever we introduce you to. The State Bar of Arizona publishes every attorney's licence status and public discipline history for free. If a recommendation from us does not survive a five-minute check, it was not worth having.
